An Integrative Case Competition (ICC) for MMPA 2015 is underway during the summer semester that integrates material from three courses within the curriculum. This initiative involves two integrative case analyses and presentations for teams of our second year students.

The objective of the ICC was to:

  • Help students develop skills to solve problems in an integrative manner.
  • Facilitate and promote the application of learned skills to real-life problems.
  • Assist students in making the connection between the core Professional Accounting courses and core MBA curriculum courses, and to emphasize the significance of these in decision making in the Accounting environment.
  • Help students develop the skill of assimilating and analyzing large amounts of raw data.
  • Encourage and emphasize the importance of group study.
  • Enhance and refine communication and presentation skills.
  • Simulate decision making in corporate environment (i.e. team, deadline).

The ICC involves the realistic study of real companies. Materials such as prospectuses, offering documents, analysts’ reviews, government task force findings and/or other raw data will the starting point for the case analysis. Hema Persad, Class 2015 comments on the case competition, “Case comp reminds me very much of the audit room when I was on my work term”.

The MMPA Program believes the ICC provides students with the highest quality experience in order to develop the knowledge, skills and foresight to become leaders in professional accounting.  Lindsay Colgan of MMPA 2015 remarked, “Case comp is a good learning experience for working within time constraints. I think it prepares us for the tight deadlines we'll have when we work in audit and industry.  It forces us to work outside our comfort zoness”. Study groups contributed significantly to this by encouraging teamwork and by exposing team members to different cultures, skills, experiences and academic backgrounds.

Well done MMPA 2015.
