On Thursday May 12th, the Masters of Management & Professional Accounting program hosted the MMPA Awards and Celebrants’ Night at UTM in the Innovation Complex Rotunda.  The recognition ceremony honoured MMPA Award recipients, and recognized recent successes on professional examinations, as well as promotions and achievement of alumni.

Professor Len Brooks, Director of the MMPA Program opened the evening by saying, “MMPA is dedicated to preparing students for professional accounting roles as: advisers, consultants, assurance providers, managers and entrepreneurs. To do this the MMPA Program has evolved to integrate the best of a graduate education in both management and professional accounting, with real-life work terms in a professional accounting environment. Excellence in our targeted professional accounting roles depends on a number of factors. First, it depends upon a comprehensive and inspirational learning experience. Our MMPA learning experience focuses on understanding how organizations create and sustain value, and on how they plan, function, identify, analyse and solve problems, and how they motivate employees.  We want our graduates to understand how information can be used for decision making by investors, managers and others, and how a professional accountant can facilitate these decisions.  We want our graduates to understand the need for and nature of an ethical culture where ethical leadership, ethical decision making, and ethical risk management are understood and practiced with moral courage. We want our graduates to be both technically competent, and able to communicate and lead effectively, build and work in teams, appreciate emerging issues such as sustainability, and apply a Global Mindset. Finally, we want our graduates to exhibit a level of professional skepticism that will differentiate them favourably in the future.”

Over one hundred and forty awards were handed out to just over one hundred recipients.  The evening began with a reception in which alumni, employers, students, faculty, staff and families had the opportunity to meet and share experiences. Representatives from CPA Ontario, EY, KPMG, BDO and many more organizations presented the students with awards from their organizations.  After the formal presentations, dinner was served buffet style, where guests had the opportunity to walk around and mingle, while they enjoyed a selection of meats from the carvery and sushi from the cold buffet.

George Xhabija, one of the celebrants honoured as an Entrance Scholarship recipient, stated: "It was such a great pleasure to partake in this event that celebrates success. Being part of the MMPA program, you realize that you are not only a graduate student, but that you are part of a well-established tradition and strong network of bright and successful individuals. I want to thank all the professors, administration and all the students for their hard work in making MMPA stronger and better every day. Thank you!"
