Advanced Standing Exemptions

Advanced standing is available to students who have completed essentially all of the required courses in the first academic term, while completing their undergraduate or graduate degree.  A grade of B- or better is required in each course put forward for exemption, and all courses considered for exemption must have been completed no more than five years prior to the date of the application.

For example, to receive advanced standing for the first MMPA term, applicants must have achieved a grade of B- of better in courses matching the coverage of all except one of the courses in the MMPA first term.  Successful applicants for one term of advanced standing will enter the 24-month MMPA Program.   Any single course for which advanced standing is not granted, must be made up as an extra during the second term of the MMPA Program.

In addition to the standard requirements, advanced standing applicants must also submit the following for assessment:

  • Course outlines must be submitted for each course submitted for exemption assessment (other than courses taken at the University of Toronto) and should include: course title and code, year and term enrolled in course, title and author of text used, subject areas studied by week, number of class hours, instructor's name and title, and the course grading scheme.
  • Applicants who cannot provide course outlines must provide a self-assessment that includes: all of the information required above and must include the Self-Assessment Form found HERE.

Note that simple course descriptions are not satisfactory. Applicants who do not provide full course outlines or a signed self-assessment that provides all of the requested information will not be considered for advanced standing. They will be considered for the 27 month stream only. Applicants will be reconsidered for advanced standing once the required documentation is submitted. EXAMPLE COURSE OUTLINE

To complete all requirements for the MMPA degree, the student must complete all of the courses in the remaining academic and work terms plus any courses from the exempted terms that were not covered in their previous studies.

Please indicate your choice of which advanced standing stream you wish to apply for on the online application form.

FAQ's

Question

What should the course outlines for advanced standing consist of?

Answer

Course outlines must be submitted for each exemption course (other than courses taken at the University of Toronto) and should include: course title and code, text and course materials used, subject areas studied, number of class hours, instructor's name and title, and the course grading scheme. Our preference is that you submit the course outlines that were issued to you by your university when you enrolled in the course. Applicants who cannot provide original course outlines must provide a self-assessment that includes: all of the information required in a course outline, an explanation of why course outlines are not available, and the applicant's signature verifying that it is a self-assessment.

Question

Answer

A student must have taken a minimum of 5 out of the 6 of the below courses, and achieved a minimum of a B- grade in each:

Question

The calendar states that advanced standing is not given on a course by course basis but rather on a term by term basis. Does this mean that if I have not completed all courses in a term that I must complete the entire term regardless of the duplication of courses?

Answer

Yes, you must have completed essentially all of the courses offered in the first academic term (excluding the MSD courses) to be eligible for the 24-month stream. The 24-month stream begins in September of each year. You must determine which stream would most appropriate for you. We will tell you if we determine that you would fit better into a different stream.

Question

Does my four-year degree have to be a business degree to be eligible for advanced standing or can it be in any discipline?

Answer

No, it does not have to be a business degree providing you have completed all of the courses required for advanced standing.

Question

I do not meet all of the requirements for advanced standing as outlined in your Program calendar.  However, I have completed a professional accounting designation.  Am I eligible for advanced standing?

Answer

No.  We will only accept equivalent courses that have been taken for degree credit at a recognized university.

Question

I have taken intermediate and advanced courses in a particular subject area (e.g. Microeconomics) Which course will be considered for advanced standing?

Answer

We will first consider the course that is most pertinent, and then consider your other courses as required.

Question

How can I tell whether the courses I have taken are equivalent to your courses for advanced standing?

Answer

It is recommended that students perform a self-assessment of their courses to determine whether they are eligible for advanced standing based on the content of their courses based on the course descriptions provided here. A student who applies for the 24M stream but is not eligible will automatically be considered for the 27M stream.

Question

How do I transfer to your university?

Answer

We do not accept transfers.  You must apply directly to the Program and meet all of our entrance requirements.  You may apply for advanced standing if you are currently studying in a similar graduate level business program and therefore complete the MMPA Program in a shorter period of time.
